St. John of the Cross on Faith, Hope, & Love

Johncross-1I was listening to a talk by Ralph Martin about St. John of the Cross (here and here), one of the 33 Doctors of the Church. At any rate, this nice triplet that really stuck out:

“Faith is believing without seeing, Hope is expecting without possessing, Love is giving without receiving.”

This simple, yet profound statement is well worth contemplating, especially in light of Blessed Mother Teresa’s life-long struggles to live her life of heroic virtue … a life drenched in the Gospels, immersed in the very Passion of her Lord.

Yet so isolated, so without consolations for oh-so-long.

Consider her life of struggle, one in which she appears to have ultimately persevered, in light of this elegant thought from St. John of the Cross.

Hopeful indeed.
